Protagonist Therapeutics announces $300 million share buyback and plans to use licensing revenue to fund pipeline
At the Citigroup Biopharma Summit, Protagonist Therapeutics highlighted its shift to a commercial phase after two approvals and reported strong launch data for ICOTYDE and positive data for MIMRYLO (Rusfertide). The company plans a $300 million share repurchase program and intends to use future licensing income to finance R&D and enhance shareholder returns. The pipeline focuses on oral peptide therapeutics in immunology, obesity and rare diseases, with Protagonist seeking early partnerships and aiming to advance programs to proof-of-concept. Near-term success and valuation depend on sustained sales of the approved products, progress of the oral candidates and favourable partnerships. » More on de.investing.com
Protagonist Therapeutics approves $300 million share buyback program
The board of directors of Protagonist Therapeutics has approved a share buyback program of up to $300 million, to be funded from cash on hand, cash equivalents, marketable securities and license and collaboration payments. As of June 30, 2026, the company had $849.5 million in cash; additional payments from Takeda totaling $275 million are expected in Q4 2026. The timing and amount of repurchases will depend on market conditions, the share price and license and milestone payments; the program does not obligate the company to buy any specific number of shares. Protagonist generates revenue from royalties under partnerships for MIMRYLO (Rusfertide) with Takeda and ICOTYDE (Icotrokinra) with Johnson & Johnson. » More on de.investing.com
Protagonist Therapeutics receives $275M after MIMRYLO FDA approval, opts for royalties
FDA approval of MIMRYLO (rusfertide) triggered $275 million in payments to Protagonist Therapeutics (a $200M opt-out fee plus a $75M approval milestone). Under the April opt-out, Protagonist agreed to tiered royalties of 14%–29% on worldwide net sales and remains eligible for up to $875 million of additional milestones, while Takeda assumes global development and commercialization. The Phase 3 VERIFY trial showed 76.9% response with MIMRYLO plus standard care versus 32.9% for placebo, but Protagonist relinquishes pricing and launch control and relies on Takeda for market access. The royalty deal provides non-dilutive capital and lower execution risk but limits upside compared with a retained profit share and depends on broad payer and physician adoption. » More on finance.yahoo.com
