Energy Vault has completed the purchase of the project site for the 125‑MW/1‑GWh Stoney Creek battery storage system in New South Wales and converted an existing lease to ownership following approval by the Foreign Investment Review Board. The facility will provide eight hours of storage; construction is planned to start in Q1 2027 after final approvals, with commercial operation expected in H1 2028. The Italian Council of Ministers has classified Energy Vault's "Digital Vault Sulcis" project as a project of outstanding national strategic interest, enabling an accelerated approval process. Planned is an AI data centre initially with around 30 MW capacity on the former Carbosulcis coal mine site in Sardinia, with a phased expansion to 50–60 MW IT capacity and up to 100 MW total power including renewable generation and storage.
