Ofgem has provisionally approved 16 long-duration electricity storage projects across Great Britain, including three pumped storage hydro schemes in Northern Scotland: SSE’s Coire Glas, Statera Energy’s Loch Kemp and Gilkes Energy’s Earba. These would be the first new pumped storage plants in the UK since 1984 and aim to bolster grid flexibility alongside other technologies such as compressed air, lithium-ion and vanadium redox flow batteries.
