The UK government has instructed the relevant regulators to include X-energy’s modular Xe-100 reactor design in the Generic Design Assessment. The review by the Office for Nuclear Regulation, the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales is expected to take about three years and will assess suitability for operation in the United Kingdom. Centrica and X-energy plan up to 6 GW of new nuclear capacity in a partnership, with Hartlepool as the first site; each Xe-100 unit provides 80 MW electric, and plants are expected to reach 320–960 MW. X-Energy, public since April, joined Project Prometheus and is using AI to speed reactor design, regulatory documentation and operations for its 80 MW Xe-100 small modular reactor. The company reports a 144-reactor pipeline (~11.5 GW) and is building TRISO fuel capacity via TRISO-X’s TX-1 facility in Oak Ridge to support initial deployments. X-Energy reported a second-quarter loss of $0.15 per share on revenue including grants of $54.6 million, driven by engineering services in the ARDP. The U.S. Department of Energy increased ARDP funding for X-Energy by up to $1 billion, bringing the government cost share to as much as $2.115 billion. The company held $1.9 billion in cash and assets at the end of the quarter, was debt-free, and secured binding HALEU supply contracts with Centrus and General Atomics.
