Aldi will step up UK investment to £900m, open more than 40 stores next year and aims for 1,500 outlets long term after reporting record annual sales of £19bn and operating profit of £433m. The chain said it opened 42 stores this year, attracted 425,300 more customers and is focused on cutting prices despite cost inflation. Aldi signed a deal with Deliveroo to pick, pack and deliver groceries bought through its app and committed to sourcing at least half its products via long-term supplier agreements to boost UK supply. Deliveroo's Italian subsidiary has been placed under judicial supervision and investigations have been opened against the country's head. According to court documents, self-employed delivery riders allegedly received wages up to 90 percent below the poverty line, averaging three to four euros per delivery. DoorDash has taken over Deliveroo and appointed Wolt founder and former DoorDash head of international operations, Miki Kuusi, as Deliveroo’s CEO based in London. Kuusi is moving from Helsinki to London and will lead the integration.
