The Australian authority Austrac has launched an investigation into Western Union and its Australian subsidiary. The probe was prompted by serious concerns that the company is not adequately managing risks related to criminal misuse of high-risk payment channels. Total Wireless, in partnership with Western Union, will offer financial services in its U.S. stores. The service launches today in selected locations and is planned to expand to additional sites by the end of 2026. Customers can send money, pay bills and purchase money orders at participating stores; customers on the MAX 5G BYO, MAX 5G and ALL ACCESS plans receive one fee-free Western Union transfer per month. Western Union and Intermex received regulatory approval from the New York State Department of Financial Services for the planned takeover after Western Union made commitments on money transfer services and locations in New York. By contrast, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation suspended the previously granted extension of approval and is requesting a renewed review of the transaction’s impacts in California.
