Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena faces opposition to plans to acquire Banco BPM and Banca Generali from large shareholders, including Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone and majority holder Delfin Sarl. Credit Agricole has also refused to tender its Banco BPM shares to MPS. Rome has suspended the sale of its remaining 4.8% stake in Monte dei Paschi di Siena for the time being and will not place it until the battle for control of the bank is concluded.
