Australia’s Sigma Healthcare has ended early-stage talks to acquire U.K. pharmacy chain Boots, saying the asset no longer fits its strategic priorities and it will focus on Australian and Asian growth. The withdrawal prolongs uncertainty over Boots’ ownership; the chain operates about 1,800 UK stores and has recently been repositioned toward higher-margin beauty and wellness categories. Sigma Pharmaceuticals’ share slid 5.5% to A$2.76 after the company confirmed it had taken part in early talks about a possible acquisition of the Boots pharmacy chain. The process is being led by Sycamore Partners and a valuation of around US$10 billion has been mentioned, but there is no certainty a deal will be completed.
