SoFi uses bank charter to fund loans with deposits, unlike Upstart and Affirm

SoFi obtained a bank charter in January 2022 and now funds loans from its growing deposit base, which rose to $45.5 billion by Q2 2026 and helped lift the company to net income of $156 million in that quarter. The charter enabled faster product and member growth — 15.8 million members and 24.4 million products — and improved profitability compared with its pre-charter losses.
