È coinvolta nella trasmissione, distribuzione e commercializzazione di gas naturale per i settori energetico, della distribuzione urbana di gas, dei fertilizzanti, industriale, automobilistico e altri settori. La società produce, commercializza e negozia anche gas naturale liquefatto (GNL); commercializza gas di petrolio liquefatto (GPL), propano, pentano, nafta, olio combustibile misto, propilene e miscela C4 idrogenata; e produce petrolchimici, come polietilene ad alta densità e polietilene lineare a bassa densità, commercializzati con i marchi G-Lex e G-Lene. Inoltre, gestisce una rete di stazioni di gas naturale compresso e fornisce gas naturale a tubazione per applicazioni domestiche, commerciali e industriali, oltre a detenere partecipazioni in 11 blocchi di esplorazione e produzione situati nei bacini di Assam-Arakan, Cambay, Cauvery, Gujarat Kutch e Myanmar, che coprono un'area di 2.170 chilometri quadrati. Inoltre, la società offre servizi di telecomunicazione tramite GAILTEL e genera, trasmette e distribuisce energia elettrica tramite un impianto eolico da 118 MW e un impianto solare da 12,26 MW. Inoltre, si occupa del noleggio di navi per il trasporto di GNL. La società possiede e gestisce circa 13.700 km di gasdotti per gas naturale; una rete di trasmissione di GPL di 2.038 km; e cinque impianti di trattamento del gas per la produzione di GPL, propano, pentano, nafta e altro. GAIL (India) Limited è stata costituita nel 1984 ed ha sede a Nuova Delhi, India.
