Sunda Energy has applied for an exploration permit for an area of about 645 km² in the offshore Taranaki Basin that includes the Awakino gas-condensate field. The application follows the announced takeover of Matahio Energy NZ and envisages technical studies of existing well and field data as well as reprocessing 450 km² of 3D seismic within 36 months. The Timor-Leste regulator has timely notified SundaGas (a subsidiary of Sunda Energy) of its intention to terminate Production Sharing Contract TL-SO-19-16 for failing to carry out the Chuditch-2 appraisal well. SundaGas has until 16 October 2026 (120 days) to respond in writing; an extension may be granted if a binding contract for a drilling rig to carry out the well in 2027 is presented.
