Ryanair is drastically cutting its winter schedule at BER, removing twelve routes from the programme. Six destinations — including Palermo, Marseille and Tallinn — will no longer be directly reachable, while six other routes will be taken over by airlines such as easyJet, Eurowings and Wizz Air. FBB expects a drop in passenger numbers and significant financial consequences, while Ryanair is offering around 700,000 fewer seats in Germany overall. Ryanair is closing its base in Berlin and plans to pull about 100 cockpit staff; the location was home to the only German works council in Ryanair’s flight operations. Pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit accuses the low-cost carrier of targeted union busting after the works council won a case at the Federal Labor Court in April and several members of the bargaining committee were dismissed during pay negotiations. High jet fuel prices caused by the Middle East conflict are driving up costs for low-cost carriers: Ryanair forecasts ticket increases of 10–20% in 2027 and has only 15% of its fuel needs hedged at old rates. Sunexpress is postponing expansion plans and expects roughly €180 million in additional costs, Eurowings is considering short-time work, and Condor is cutting routes such as Dubai.
