The federal government has contractually stipulated that Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica must remove all critical Huawei and ZTE components from their 5G core networks by the end of 2026; by the end of 2029 the network management systems must also be replaced. The EU Commission is planning a legal basis that would give it a final authority to prohibit the use of particularly high-risk foreign network technology. Brussels could thereby impose mandatory measures that list Huawei and ZTE as high-risk providers and forbid the expansion or continued presence of their components in critical infrastructure.
