NioCorp has signed a non-binding letter of intent with Lockheed Martin for the potential purchase of up to 15 tonnes of scandium oxide per year over ten years. Deliveries are to come from the Elk Creek project in Nebraska, either as pure oxide or as an aluminum‑scandium alloy. NioCorp has begun building the main access portal to the underground portion of the Elk Creek project in Nebraska and is investing $44.6 million. The portal will serve as the primary access for personnel, equipment and materials and will transport ore from the underground workings to the surface facility; a notice of commencement of construction has been filed with the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The company has moved construction equipment to the site, is carrying out detailed planning and expects the portal project to be completed in about nine months.
