Mapfre has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Safety Insurance for about $1.54 billion. Safety shareholders will receive $105 per share, representing a 44% premium to the current share price. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027 and is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, including approval from the Massachusetts insurance regulator and the Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period. Mapfre reports a Q1 2026 net profit of €311m (+12.7%), while premium income fell 2.2% to €8.4bn as management prioritized profitability over volume. The combined ratio in non-life improved to 93.2%, supported by better loss ratios in most regions; the reinsurance segment and the business in Brazil showed particularly strong growth. The Solvency II ratio was 205.3% and assets under management rose to €67.5bn, while debt increased due to time-limited refinancings.
