Ameris Bank ordered to pay $79.5 million in whistleblower case

A U.S. federal court awarded Patrick Byrne $79.5 million in his whistleblower suit against Ameris Bank after a jury found the institution liable for wrongful termination, retaliation, wage underpayment and breach of contract. The amount includes $16.6 million in compensatory damages and contract penalties and $62.9 million in punitive damages, including roughly $9 million in unpaid wages and bonuses.
