VW group works council chair Daniela Cavallo is demanding binding commitments to preserve jobs in Germany and warns of massive consequences for suppliers. She also calls for a tougher stance on China, including tariffs on Chinese hybrid vehicles and stronger local-content rules. The board is already planning cuts of 50,000 jobs in Germany and a further 50,000 worldwide, while the future of several plants remains uncertain. Volkswagen announced two recalls in the US covering a total of more than 250,000 vehicles. On 208,724 vehicles a corroding bolt in the steering gear can break and cause loss of steering control; affected are certain Tiguan 2018, Atlas 2018–2019 and Audi Q3 2019–2021 models, and an estimated 1 percent have the defect.
