Babcock shares jump after John Healey appointed chancellor

Shares in defence suppliers rose after John Healey was named chancellor, with Babcock up about 7%, BAE Systems up 3% and Rolls‑Royce nearly 2% as investors bet he may boost military spending. Healey has previously advocated measures such as "war bonds" and resigned last month over defence funding, but analysts warn competing fiscal pressures may limit near-term gains for the sector. Babcock reports 19% drop in underlying operating profit after £140m loss on Type 31 frigate contract

Babcock said underlying operating profits fell 19% to £293.3m as a £140m charge on its 2019 Type 31 frigate contract made the programme loss-making. The firm blamed limited contractual escalation protection against cost rises from Brexit, Covid, higher raw material prices, labour shortages and late-stage design changes to the first two ships. Excluding the Type 31 hit, operating profits rose 19% to £433m driven by stronger nuclear and aviation performance, and Babcock highlighted £9.8bn of forward contracts and recent contract wins. Babcock awarded six-month bridging contract for UK submarine support

Babcock has signed a six-month bridging contract with the UK Ministry of Defence to continue support services for naval bases and the nuclear submarine fleet. The contract takes effect after the previous five-year deal under the Future Maritime Support Programme expired, ensuring uninterrupted delivery of critical services while negotiations proceed on a new long-term agreement. The Ministry of Defence also signed a memorandum of intent on a long-term strategic partnership with Babcock and the Royal Navy.
