The Sandoz plant in Kundl is the last fully integrated penicillin factory in Europe, but it is threatened with closure because of significantly cheaper Chinese competition and high energy and production costs. Despite EU funding to expand capacity, production is economically unviable according to Sandoz, which has therefore filed an anti-dumping investigation in Brussels against Chinese active ingredients.
