Since April, Spar has been operating ten electric refrigerated trucks from MAN and Mercedes with 600 kWh batteries and up to 400 kilometers of range. The e-vehicles are expected to save around 2,500 tonnes of CO2 over five years; an electric refrigerated truck incurs roughly €300,000 in additional costs, of which subsidies from the Ministry of Mobility covered about 80 percent. Spar plans to procure half of all new vehicles electrically in the future but sees bottlenecks in charging infrastructure and grid capacity (St. Pölten: 4.5 to 12.5 MW with a full switch). Spar is recalling the product SPAR Natur*pur by NENI organic hummus natural 125 g with best-before date up to and including 07.07.2026 due to possible salmonella contamination of the raw tahina. The affected items have been removed from sale and customers were asked not to consume the product. The supervisory board of Spar has arranged the succession early: Markus Kaser will take over as CEO on January 1, 2028, and will be responsible, among other areas, for purchasing, assortment management, marketing, PR, IT, corporate strategy and the Italy business. Current board members Hans K. Reisch and Marcus Wild will retire at the end of 2027 due to age; Reisch will move to the supervisory board at the beginning of 2028. Paul Klotz will remain on the board, and Johannes Holzleitner, Gerhard Wandl and Tanja Wiesmann have been newly appointed from within the company.
