VMware: 90 percent of customers consider alternatives after price increases

A survey by Rimini Street shows that 90 percent of surveyed IT decision-makers are considering leaving VMware (and Broadcom) because of high licensing costs. The end of support for vSphere 8 is pushing many to look for alternatives, yet almost half do not plan to move to subscription-based offerings like VVF or VCF. Instead, many intend to introduce alternative hypervisors gradually and pursue a multi-hypervisor strategy, with cost reduction named as the main goal. VMware doesn't experience a mass exodus; 86% of companies are reducing its use

A CloudBolt survey (January 2026, 302 North American IT decision-makers) shows only 4% have fully replaced their VMware infrastructure, while 86% are actively reducing its use. Broadcom's shift to subscription, core‑metered licensing has led to significant price increases; most report hikes of 25–49%, with some cases well above that. Migrations typically take 18–24 months and are slowed by complexity, cost and technical constraints; many are moving to public‑cloud IaaS or alternatives such as Nutanix AHV, Proxmox or KVM.
