The Sandoz plant in Kundl is the last fully integrated penicillin factory in Europe, but it is threatened with closure because of significantly cheaper Chinese competition and high energy and production costs. Despite EU funding to expand capacity, production is economically unviable according to Sandoz, which has therefore filed an anti-dumping investigation in Brussels against Chinese active ingredients. US states have asked a federal court in Connecticut for preliminary approval of a settlement with Sandoz over alleged price‑fixing for generics. The agreement covers 43 US jurisdictions and provides for total payments of $400 million over seven years, about $320.6 million as settlement principal and $79.4 million in interest. Sandoz and Fougera Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary acquired in 2012, are accused of fixing prices and dividing markets; Sandoz denies the allegations.
