UK car sales top 2m in 2025 as MG and other Chinese brands surge

Total new car registrations in the UK exceeded 2 million in 2025, driven by a near doubling of Chinese marques to 9.7% market share (196,000 vehicles). Electric vehicle sales rose 24% to a record 473,000 units (23.4% of the market), cutting average new-car emissions by 10%, but manufacturers are relying on large discounts and PHEV loopholes to meet ZEV targets. BYD drives price war among Chinese automakers and puts Europe under pressure

Chinese manufacturers such as BYD, MG and Great Wall are using cost advantages and aggressive home-market pricing to gain market share and prepare for the European market. A study by the Center Automotive Research expects electric car prices in Europe to fall despite EU import tariffs, as scale effects, battery production and lower sales and marketing costs further reduce expenses.
