X-FAB builds new chip factory in Erfurt to strengthen European semiconductor supply

X-FAB has laid the foundation stone for the new Fab4Micro in Erfurt, which will manufacture microsystems for automotive, industrial and medical technology. X-Fab lays the foundation for a new semiconductor fab in Erfurt, with the investment estimated at €300–400 million. The federal government and the state of Thuringia are supporting the project with a total of €127.4 million (€80.3 million from the federal government, €47.1 million from the state). The expansion is intended to relieve the heavily utilized MEMS and photonics production; the first chips are due to be produced by the end of 2028 and about 100 additional jobs will be created. X‑Fab is building a new chip factory in Erfurt with investments of 300 to 400 million euros; the ground‑breaking has begun and production is scheduled to start at the end of 2028. The federal government and the state of Thuringia are supporting the project with a total of 127.4 million euros (80.3 million from the federal government, 47.1 million from the state). The expansion is driven by high utilization of the existing MEMS fab and rising demand for microsystems for AI, data centers, optics and medical technology.
