Helix unveils aircraft design claiming up to 90% lower fuel use

U.K.-based electric motor specialist Helix released a white paper detailing a hybrid-electric regional aircraft architecture that uses lightweight high-density motors, ducted fans and a compact generator to cut fuel burn dramatically on flights under 250 nautical miles. The design uses electric power for takeoff and landing while recharging batteries in flight, and Helix says it can reduce fuel consumption by as much as 90% (or about 74% versus comparable aircraft) for short routes.
