BASF offers Evonik €22.15 per share – takeover would threaten thousands of jobs

BASF made a formal offer for Evonik, which the Evonik board rejected, but the takeover intentions are considered serious. Advisors estimate that synergies in Germany could eliminate up to 3,000 jobs at Evonik in addition to already planned cutback programs, particularly at the Marl and Essen sites. Other locations such as Dossenheim, Hanau, Wesseling and Rheinfelden would also be affected by adjustments. BASF affected by historic low water on the Rhine and logistics problems

Persistent low water levels on the Rhine have reached record lows and force cargo ships to carry significantly reduced loads, heavily straining supplies to BASF, which receives about half of its intermediates by ship. The Middle Rhine between St. Goar and Mainz is practically partially closed, disrupting transports of oil, coal and chemicals. Industry representatives are calling for a deepening of the fairway and more low-water-capable ships; sustainable relief is only expected after substantial autumn rainfall.
