  • Globalfoundries on a massive growth course: expansion in Dresden, two plants planned in New York

Globalfoundries is significantly increasing its production capacity: €1.1 billion is being invested in Dresden and the site is set to grow by almost half in the next expansion stage; according to the company there is still room there for three more fabs. At the same time management announced two new manufacturing sites in Malta/NY with total costs of $21 billion, each receiving around $1 billion in U.S. subsidies and predominantly $10 billion in Japanese financing. The company is starting production of AI-capable chips on the FDX‑Fusion platform (about 7‑nanometer class) and is focusing on edge and robotics applications rather than large data-center chips. Globalfoundries emphasizes the strategic importance of the projects for industrial AI and notes that Europe should closely monitor the build-out. » More on faz.net

  • Globalfoundries bets on silicon photonics and billion-euro financing from Japan

Globalfoundries is using its GF Fotonix platform (300mm wafers) to integrate optical and electronic components on a single chip, accelerating data transfer in AI data centers. Billion-euro financing from Japan eases the balance sheet and is intended to enable scalable growth without taking on significant equity risk. The author sees a convincing investment case in the company’s long-term prospects. » More on finanzen.net

  • Globalfoundries announces FDX Fusion 7‑nm class for Dresden with production starting in 2028

Globalfoundries unveiled the new FDX Fusion platform in Dresden, an FD‑SOI‑based process offering 7‑nm‑class digital performance and roughly double the transistor density compared with 22FDX. The technology is intended to provide low leakage currents, high radiation tolerance and improved RF performance for applications such as radar, 5G and mobile AI. First example chips are expected in early 2027, production is planned to start in 2028, and an initial PDK will be available in mid‑2027; Globalfoundries is also collaborating with Fames projects on 10‑ and 7‑nm FD‑SOI. » More on golem.de
