Geely's Zeekr targets North America as Chinese EVs expand globally
Geely Auto Group's luxury brand Zeekr is ramping up production at a highly automated Ningbo plant and plans to enter North American markets after a trade deal that allows 49,000 Chinese EVs into Canada in year one with tariffs cut to 6%. Zeekr emphasises high quality, advanced features and significantly lower prices versus US rivals, and will begin exporting the top-end 9X to Europe and the Middle East. Rising Chinese EV market share in Australia and Europe underscores the competitive threat to US automakers, though the US currently maintains tariff and security barriers to Chinese vehicles. » More on cbsnews.com
Waymo importing thousands of Chinese-built Zeekr vans for US robotaxi fleet
Since 2024 more than 3,200 Zeekr CM1e vans have been shipped through the Port of Los Angeles, with over 2,600 arriving this year, and are being deployed by Waymo as its Waymo Ojai robotaxis. High US tariffs on Chinese-built EVs would roughly double the CM1e's Chinese-market price from $39,000 to about $89,000, not including Waymo's autonomous hardware costs. Zeekr appears to have no other US partner, indicating these imports are primarily for Waymo's expanding fleet. » More on forbes.com
Waymo importing thousands of Zeekr Ojai vans despite high U.S. tariffs
Waymo has imported more than 3,200 Zeekr CM1e vans (branded Ojai) through the Port of Los Angeles since 2024, greatly expanding its robotaxi fleet despite punitive tariffs on Chinese-built EVs. The vehicles arrive without sensors or compute, which Waymo installs in Mesa, Arizona to meet U.S. security rules and safety standards. The Ojai’s spacious design and lower-cost 6th-generation hardware are central to Waymo’s plan to scale to 1 million weekly rides and accelerate revenue growth, even if tariffs and integration costs complicate profitability. » More on forbes.com
