  • BASF turns to low-water ships while German inland shipping remains outdated

After delivery problems in 2018, BASF has chartered several ships optimized for low water, including Stolt Ludwigshafen, Caletto and specialized gas carriers, and says it is better prepared despite initial supply bottlenecks. Industry representatives warn the inland fleet is on average 70 years old and that an investment backlog threatens supply security. They are calling for a large-scale investment programme for around 1,000 new ships and state financing models, since small shipping companies can hardly finance newbuilds themselves; political measures have so far been lacking. » More on faz.net

  • BASF relies on low-water-optimized ships as insurance against supply outages

BASF is boosting supply security for its Ludwigshafen site by using exclusively low-water-optimized tankers such as the “Gas 94”, which can still carry cargo at very low river levels. The specialist vessels achieve this with wider, more voluminous hulls, lightweight construction, diesel-electric propulsion and smaller swiveling azimuth thrusters, but they incur higher purchase and operating costs. Even with nine units built by 2026, such ships are no cure-all: at extremely low single-digit water levels they reach physical limits and cannot fully prevent interruptions to Rhine shipping, so they function more as an expensive insurance for critical industrial customers. » More on wiwo.de

  • BASF prepares IPO of agriculture-chemicals division Agriculture Solutions

BASF is gradually spinning off Agriculture Solutions and setting up an independent corporate headquarters to manage the unit more autonomously. A possible IPO is being prepared for 2027; the exact timing and size will depend on market conditions and BASF will initially remain the majority shareholder. In 2025, Agriculture Solutions reported sales of €9.6 billion, invested €1 billion in R&D and is expected to contribute €7.5 billion to sales by 2035 through innovations. » More on finanzen.net
