Daktronics reports cost-driven profit despite revenue decline, new outdoor displays to ship in Q4

Daktronics achieved improved profitability in Q1 2010 through cost reductions, lean manufacturing and a roughly $2 million reduction in warranty costs despite falling revenues. Management is redesigning its outdoor display product family and expects shipments of the new platform in fiscal Q4 2010, with product development spending likely to exceed 5% of sales in the short term. Backlog may decline near term but several $10m+ sports opportunities could boost orders by Q3 end; competitive aggressive pricing is weighing on win rates.
