  • Flughafen Wien cancels construction of third runway due to exploding costs

The executive board of Flughafen Wien has definitively stopped the third-runway project after 25 years of planning and 39 expert reviews, mainly because of sharply increased construction costs and ongoing legal uncertainty. The runway would not have been completed before 2033, so passengers are unlikely to notice any effects in the coming years; capacity shortfalls are to be eased by larger aircraft and optimized procedures. Planning and review work already carried out remains usable, and the plans could be reissued and updated later if needed. » More on kurier.at

  • Flughafen Wien stops construction of third runway and lowers profit forecast

The management board of Flughafen Wien decided after thorough analysis not to pursue the third-runway project. With the planned two-runway system and expansions, the airport aims to handle up to 52 million passengers per year. Key reasons were sharply increased construction costs (around €2 billion), resistance from major airline customers and a still-pending court decision; this leads to impairment charges of nearly €56 million. The annual net profit forecast is thus reduced to about €210 million (instead of around €230 million); positive effects from improved traffic development have already been factored in. » More on finanzen.net

  • Flughafen Wien supplies 38 Raiffeisen banks with solar surplus via citizen energy community

Flughafen Wien is using surpluses from its photovoltaic systems and supplies around 5 GWh of green electricity annually to 38 Raiffeisen banks through the newly founded "Raiffeisen & Flughafen BEG eGen." The systems produce about 45 GWh per year in total and currently cover roughly half of the airport's electricity demand. If supply falls short, Raiffeisen-owned provider Auri steps in, and billing is handled by Enlion. The airport plans further PV capacity expansion as part of the Terminal 3 southern extension in pursuit of its CO2 neutrality target. » More on kurier.at
