  • Lithium Americas lags despite $2.3bn US backing as Thacker Pass delays and price risks weigh on stock

Lithium Americas has fallen about 18.7% since the $2.3 billion US investment as its Thacker Pass mine remains in development and the company is not yet generating meaningful cash flow. Project cost inflation and delayed timelines, combined with a drop from 2022 lithium price peaks, have compressed valuation models. The government loan support reduces financing risk, but upside depends on successful execution and commodity price recovery, making the stock a high-risk, long-horizon bet. » More on finance.yahoo.com

  • Lithium Americas to be added to the S&P/TSX Composite Index

S&P Dow Jones Indices will add Lithium Americas to the S&P/TSX Composite Index effective December 22, 2025. The company is developing the Thacker Pass project in Nevada (62% stake), which Lithium Americas says contains the largest known lithium resource and reserve; phase 1 targets 40,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year with mechanical completion planned for the end of 2027. Project financing is considered secured, including a $2.23 billion loan from the US Department of Energy and strategic investments from General Motors and Orion Resource Partners. Lithium Americas also announced an at-the-market equity program for $250 million, while analysts such as JPMorgan and BMO raised the stock to Neutral and set price targets of $5.00. » More on de.investing.com

  • US takes equity stake in Lithium Americas' Thacker Pass project

The Department of Energy will take a 5% equity stake in Lithium Americas plus an additional 5% in its joint Thacker Pass project with GM as part of a loan restructuring that adds over $100 million in new equity. Thacker Pass is slated to produce about 40,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate annually by 2028, a large increase versus current US output, and the stake aims to support the project's viability amid falling lithium prices. The mine has faced strong opposition from Native American tribes, ranchers and environmental groups and was subject to rights concerns in a February 2025 report. » More on theverge.com
