Nyrstar could cover up to 25 percent of Europe’s germanium demand but needs state backing

Nyrstar sees potential in its refineries, especially the Stolberg plant, to produce germanium, antimony and bismuth as by-products of zinc and lead refining. For germanium the company could supply about 25 percent of European demand and could ramp up production within three to five years. However, Nyrstar considers a stand‑alone investment too risky because Chinese export restrictions could be lifted at any time, so it is calling for competitive electricity costs, subsidies and price‑protection mechanisms such as minimum prices or contracts‑for‑difference. The conversion would be considerably cheaper than building a new refinery and would also reduce waste volumes, yet government commitments are still lacking. » More on handelsblatt.com
