RealPage barred from using real-time landlord data in rent-pricing algorithm

RealPage reached a settlement with the Department of Justice resolving a federal antitrust suit that accused its software of enabling landlords to drive up rents through algorithmic coordination. Under the proposed deal, RealPage cannot use nonpublic real-time data to produce price recommendations; any nonpublic data used to train pricing algorithms must be at least one year old. The Department of Justice reached a settlement with RealPage that limits the company’s collection and use of competing landlords' data and prohibits using it to set rents. If approved, RealPage must base its pricing algorithm only on landlord data at least 12 months old and remove or redesign features that discourage price cuts or prompt price matching.
