  • Rio Tinto impresses with strong half-year results and attractive valuation

    Rio Tinto reports a 15% revenue increase to USD 31.0bn for the first six months of 2026, an EBITDA rise of 28% to USD 4.8bn and a net profit increase of 47% to USD 6.7bn. Production of copper, aluminium and lithium rose by 3%, and Pilbara iron ore production reached its highest level since 2018. The group plans to expand lithium capacity from at least 61,000 tonnes in 2026 to up to 200,000 tonnes by 2028 and benefits in the short term from export disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.   • Rio Tinto secures power supply for Tomago aluminium smelter until 2038

    Rio Tinto, majority shareholder of Tomago Aluminium, has reached an agreement with Tomago, the Australian government and New South Wales to secure the power supply for Australia’s largest aluminium smelter until 2038. From 1 January 2029 a ten‑year power purchase agreement will guarantee supply, and from 2033 the electricity will be sourced 100% from renewable sources. Rio Tinto plans real investments of A$1.1 billion through 2038, including A$100 million for decarbonisation, and expects an annual reduction in Scope‑1 and Scope‑2 emissions of 7.1 million tonnes.   • Australia grants Rio Tinto AUD 2.5 billion for Tomago aluminium smelter

    The Australian government and New South Wales are providing a AUD 2.5 billion support package to secure operations at the Tomago aluminium smelter beyond 2028 and to help fund the construction of 3 gigawatts of new power generation capacity. Tomago has committed at least AUD 1.1 billion of its own investment, including AUD 100 million for decarbonisation. Rio Tinto welcomed the agreement and plans to transition the plant to 100% renewable energy by 2033.
