Seagate: AI is changing the economics and strategy of data storage
At the Six Five Summit, Seagate said AI increases the value of unstructured data and forces companies to revise retention, location and access strategies. The company emphasized that 80% of the world’s data currently resides on hard drives in data centers and that volume is growing rapidly due to AI applications. Seagate outpaces Western Digital in exabyte growth and margins, says Evercore
Evercore sees Seagate in June 2026 with annual exabyte growth of 34% (218 EB) versus 22% at Western Digital (231 EB), and even stronger gains in the nearline segment. Seagate achieved incremental gross margins of over 90% and overall gross margins of 57–58%, while Western Digital had incremental gains of around 67% and gross margins of 55.5%.
