SoftBank shares fall sharply after turmoil over AI development
SoftBank shares dropped more than 13% intraday on Monday and closed about 10.7% below last weekâs closing price after concerns about AI safety weighed on markets. At the same time the NASDAQ 100 hit a six-week low, while chip stocks such as Nvidia, AMD, Micron and equipment suppliers fell sharply. The trigger were dramatic warnings from researchers and calls to slow AI development, along with growing regulatory discussions in the US and EU. SB Energy IPO lifts Softbank shares
Softbank's stock rose 8.1% to 6,314 yen, recovering from a more than 11% drop the previous day after optimism grew over the planned IPO of data center subsidiary SB Energy. SB Energy plans to sell $500 million of shares in Japan and is targeting a valuation of up to $50 billion. Nvidia has committed to a $1.5 billion private placement, and OpenAI holds warrants worth around $5.5 billion. SoftBank shares climbed 9.1% to „6,372 after SB Energy filed updated documents for a U.S. IPO. SB Energy plans to sell new shares worth up to $500 million to Japanese investors and is targeting a valuation of about $50 billion. Nvidia has committed to invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy through a private placement, and OpenAI holds warrants worth roughly $5.5 billion.
