U.S. Steel under scrutiny after deadly explosion at Clairton coke works
An August blast at U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works killed two workers and injured 11, prompting a Chemical Safety Board investigation that identified potentially unmitigated hazards and questioned procedures used during valve maintenance. Current and former workers and regulators point to chronic underinvestment, management decisions and recurring pollution control failures as contributors to safety and environmental risks. Nippon Steel’s 2025 acquisition brought pledges of large investments, but concrete plans and timelines for upgrades, safety fixes and emissions reductions at Clairton remain unclear and have left workers skeptical. » More on yahoo.com
U.S. Steel CEO says Trump's golden share won't block company strategy
U.S. Steel CEO David Burritt stated that the so‑called golden share granted to former President Trump as part of Nippon Steel's acquisition will not prevent the company from pursuing its plans. Burritt said the provision applies only to certain major corporate decisions and that management will continue executing its strategy. He emphasized U.S. Steel will do "what we want to do" despite the provision. » More on cbsnews.com
U.S. Steel says it remains an American company after Nippon Steel acquisition
CEO David Burritt says the Nippon Steel deal — which includes a government 'golden share' requiring presidential approval for certain major actions — does not prevent U.S. Steel from operating as before. He said routine plans like reopening the Granite City blast furnace proceeded without a presidential veto and that closures would only occur with approval, though the company sees no need to close plants now. Burritt highlighted a $14 billion investment from the partnership expected to support up to 100,000 direct or indirect jobs and praised tariffs as strengthening national and economic security. » More on cbsnews.com
