Vulcan Energy launches billion-euro Lionheart project to extract lithium and geothermal energy in the Upper Rhine Graben
Vulcan Energy has secured financing for the Lionheart project, which aims to produce deep geothermal heat in Landau while extracting lithium from thermal brine. The first phase costs €2.2 billion and is planned to produce up to 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate per year, as well as about 560 GWh of heat and 275 GWh of electricity annually. Plans include a combined plant in Landau, downstream processing in Frankfurt‑Höchst and supplementary drilling. Funding comes from state climate funds, a consortium (including the EIB with €250 million) and €528 million of Vulcan equity. The groundbreaking took place on 5 December 2025; commissioning is expected roughly 2.5 years after construction begins. » Plus sur heise.de
