The federal government pledged in 2025 to support Rio Tinto with up to €4.9 million for the planned lithium project in the Jadar Valley. The funds were to be used, among other things, for an image campaign, capacity building in Serbian ministries and support in contract negotiations with the Serbian government. There have been widespread protests in Serbia for years against the project over environmental and corruption concerns.
