The company lowered its EPS outlook to reflect higher interest expense from recent refinancing while reaffirming full-year operational targets. North American margins improved materially on pricing, new products and cost cuts, and Whirlpool expects another step-up in Q3 as July list-price and builder pricing take effect. Whirlpool hosted US Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling at its Clyde plant and presented the four-year, state-certified apprenticeship program for production workers there. The plant, which the company says is the world’s largest washing machine factory, is being modernized as part of a $300 million investment in its laundry care divisions in Clyde and Marion. Whirlpool is also building a new parts plant in Perrysburg with space for up to 150 employees; the company employs about 20,000 people in the US, 14,000 of them in production.
