AMD shares fall sharply after AI safety warnings, chip sector under pressure

AMD gains initial GCC support for shared AI instructions, easing x86 developer adoption

A September GCC commit added initial support for the AI Compute Extensions (ACE) jointly developed by AMD and Intel, bringing their shared matrix-acceleration instruction set into a major compiler. Compiler support could lower developer effort to target future x86 AI workloads and expand the addressable market, but it does not prove shipped hardware, performance advantages or commercial adoption. AMD raises 2030 addressable market estimate to $2–3 trillion

CFO Jean Hu told investors AMD's total addressable market could reach $2 trillion to $3 trillion by 2030, lifting the top end by $1 trillion and prompting an immediate share-price rise. The company’s data-center segment, which supplied 58% of Q2 revenue and more than doubled year over year, is the main growth driver and management expects it to more than double again in 2027. At current valuation, AMD would need roughly $35 billion of annual profit (about $145 billion revenue) to justify the price, implying the market already assumes a meaningful slice of that TAM.
