Honda plans cost cuts of over $9 billion under pressure from Chinese EV makers
Honda aims to save about 1.5 trillion yen (9.4 billion USD) by 2030 and has forced suppliers to make drastic price cuts to become more competitive with Chinese makers like BYD. Targets include roughly 30% cost reductions for stamped/forged parts, electrical components and software-defined vehicle elements, plus more standardized parts and increased sourcing from downstream, including Chinese, suppliers. Honda moves toward software alliance with Nissan to develop vehicle operating system
Honda is reportedly close to agreeing with Nissan to jointly develop a vehicle operating system and onboard computer for models from around 2029, though no deal is finalized. The collaboration would let Honda spread software development costs across more vehicles as it balances record quarterly profits with JPY520 billion of forecast EV-related losses and a sharp sales decline in China. Honda and Nissan plan joint vehicle software and onboard computers from 2029
According to Nikkei, Honda and Nissan are expected to agree on jointly developing an operating system and onboard computer for new vehicles starting in 2029. Honda emphasizes that no final agreement has been reached and talks with Nissan and Mitsubishi on potential cooperation areas are ongoing.
