China Vanke narrowly avoids default as debt extensions highlight fragile property recovery
China Vanke narrowly averted default on a 2 billion yuan bond after bondholders agreed to extend repayment deadlines and approved delays for another 3.7 billion yuan, underscoring the slow recovery in China’s property market. The developer's revenue fell 27% year-on-year in the latest quarter, several onshore bonds were suspended, and ratings agencies have downgraded Vanke to default statuses. With more than 50 billion dollars of debt and short-term obligations far exceeding cash reserves, analysts warn Vanke’s troubles could signal limits to state support and further weigh on the broader real estate sector. » More on abcnews.go.com
Vanke avoids immediate default as bondholders extend grace period
Holders of Vanke’s 2 billion yuan note approved an extension of the grace period to Jan. 28, averting an immediate default after the company missed the Dec. 15 maturity. A proposal to defer principal for 12 months failed, and Vanke is still seeking creditor approval to delay payment on a separate 3.7 billion yuan bond due Dec. 28. The developer faces severe liquidity strain, roughly $50 billion of interest-bearing liabilities, large recent losses and a Fitch downgrade to C, leaving restructuring or default a significant risk in the coming months. » More on finance.yahoo.com
