MPS Group reports strong Q2 profit and accelerates merger with Mediobanca
MPS Group posted a net profit of over €600m in Q2 (€1.1bn in H1) and an operating net profit of €1bn in the quarter (€2bn in H1). Drivers were higher fee income, stable loan growth and tighter cost control; the CET1 ratio rose to 16.3%. Management raised its pre-tax profit forecast for 2026 to €3.6bn and expects merger synergies with Mediobanca to exceed the €700m target by about €100m. Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS) released preliminary 2025 figures showing a consolidated net profit of €3.0bn before PPA and a standalone net profit of €2.75bn (up 17.7% adjusted). The bank proposes a sector-leading dividend of €0.86 per share (10% dividend yield), a CET1 ratio of 16.2%, and improved asset quality (gross NPEs 3.5%). Monte dei Paschi takes over 62.3% of Mediobanca and forms new banking group
Monte dei Paschi has acquired 62.3% of Mediobanca through an increased takeover offer; Mediobanca CEO Alberto Nagel offered his resignation. The merged group has total assets of €237.5 billion and takes on, among other things, Mediobanca’s 13.2% stake in Generali.
