Telefónica apparently plans to cut around 1,650 full-time jobs after loss of 1&1
According to internal documents, Telefónica expects to eliminate about 1,650 full-time positions by 2028, significantly more than the up to 1,100 jobs announced by July for the end of 2026. The move follows the switch of major MVNO customer 1&1 to Vodafone, which will cause substantial revenue losses; restructuring costs are estimated at €427 million. O2 Telefónica: revenue and EBITDA fall after loss of major customer 1&1
In the second quarter O2 Telefónica’s revenue fell 11.1% to around €1.8bn and EBITDA declined 7.2% to about €0.6bn, mainly because major customer 1&1 switched to Vodafone and roughly 12 million mobile customers were rebooked. Smartphone sales plunged by about a quarter. New CEO Santiago Argelich Hesse has launched a tough cost-cutting programme with around 1,100 job cuts and the closure of 60 shops, and a second savings phase is planned for 2027. O2 Telefónica plans to cut over 1,000 positions as part of a broad transformation, roughly one in every six to seven roles. The move follows the loss of major customer 1&1, declining revenues and lower adjusted EBITDA, which has already led to agreements on voluntary departures and a reduction in the size of the board.
