Vale's Carajás complex drives iron-ore exports while displacing Amazon communities

The Grand Carajás project, operated mainly by Vale, is the world’s largest high‑grade iron‑ore mining complex and a major source of exports to China. Launched in 1982, the project transformed Brazil into a mining power but has caused pollution, forced relocations, land conflicts and cultural losses for local and Indigenous communities. Scotiabank raises Vale price target to $18 as copper now included in valuation

Scotiabank raised its price target on Vale to $18 from $16.50 and kept a Sector Perform rating after incorporating copper growth into its valuation model. JPMorgan also lifted its target to $19.50 and maintained an Overweight rating following an updated company model. Vale misses Q1 forecasts and stock falls sharply in after-hours trading

Vale reported Q1 2026 EPS of $0.44 and revenue of $9.26 billion, missing analyst expectations of $0.51 and $9.49 billion. The stock fell about 7.15% in after-hours trading and closed at $15.85.
