Wirecard trial: judges dismiss Markus Braun's victim theory as speculative

In the Munich trial over years of billion-euro falsifications, the judges called Markus Braun's claim that he was the victim of an embezzlement offence “speculation” and found no indications of genuine third-party partner transactions. If convicted, the defendants also face confiscation of sums in the millions; for Braun the amount is just under €39 million. Wirecard: judges dismiss Braun's victim thesis as unconvincing

In the Munich trial over the Wirecard fraud, judges rejected the victim thesis advanced by former CEO Markus Braun and found that, despite extensive investigations, there was no evidence of genuine third‑party partner transactions. After three years of trial and continued pretrial detention, Braun faces a long prison sentence; the court also pointed out that millions could be confiscated in the event of a conviction. Specifically, nearly €39 million could be seized from Braun, about €6 million from key witness Oliver Bellenhaus, and more than €600,000 from the former chief accountant. Insolvency administrator Jaffé: Wirecard creditors must continue to wait for payments

In his latest status report, insolvency administrator Michael Jaffé urges patience: an initial interim distribution and a reliable estimate of the payout quota remain unforeseeable, since many liability and avoidance proceedings against former managers, EY and insurers are likely to take years. The realization of the investment assets is largely complete, but Jaffé expects liquidation proceeds from Wirecard Bank only in 2026.
