Wirecard: defense seeks to suspend trial shortly before verdict

The defense of former CEO Markus Braun has asked for the suspension of the trial, underway since December 2022, citing his right to a fair trial and changed circumstances. The request is linked to a separate ongoing fraud case against a former Wirecard manager whose testimony the defense considers central; she was extradited earlier this year. The court said it would decide quickly and otherwise intends to conclude the trial; the prosecution opposes a suspension. Wirecard: judges dismiss Braun's victim thesis as unconvincing

In the Munich trial over the Wirecard fraud, judges rejected the victim thesis advanced by former CEO Markus Braun and found that, despite extensive investigations, there was no evidence of genuine third‑party partner transactions. After three years of trial and continued pretrial detention, Braun faces a long prison sentence; the court also pointed out that millions could be confiscated in the event of a conviction. Specifically, nearly €39 million could be seized from Braun, about €6 million from key witness Oliver Bellenhaus, and more than €600,000 from the former chief accountant.
