Arla warns labour shortages threaten UK dairy supply

Arla says five in six dairy farmers receive few or no applications for vacancies, with shortages worsened by Brexit and the pandemic, forcing some producers to cut output and prompting nearly 200 farmers to quit in the past year. Arla’s UK managing director Bas Padberg warns the shortages are pushing up costs and could affect supermarket availability, and calls for joint action from industry, education and government as the sector faces an ageing workforce. The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) figures show the number of British milk producers has fallen to 7,040, intensifying concerns about UK milk self-sufficiency. » More on theguardian.com
